The Hudson Steakhouse – Mind-Blowing Meats!

Firstly, Sorry it’s taken a while for this review! Had a few busy week as I got back from Bath with admin, performing and networking. I’m back and I’m the zone! Thanks for being patient!

So as most of you know I’m a MASSIVE steak lover and will seek out the best steak where I am if the crazing takes me. I was really happy to see after not a lot of searching, that there was an award-winning steak resto in Bath, no questions asked, I booked a table for 1. Miller & Carter is down the road from this restaurant and would usually be the first choice for a lot of people when actually, 50 metres further down the road is The Hudson Steakhouse. While Miller & Carter is a great steak restaurant, my goal was to check out some less known/non-franchise places to spend my time in.

I arrived and was greeted by name by the bartender… rockstar status confirmed. they clearly took the time to know there’s bookings or maybe the fact I was lone wolf eating. It was nice to be greeted by name anyhow!

The restaurant was warm and modern with a luxe feel to it, perfect for date night or a work dinner. It was previously a Victorian pub that was converted into this stylish yet historical feeling restaurant. Sophistication is the main MO of this restaurant with extremely attentive staff that are happy to help and suggest without being too pushy about the £16 glass of wine that you just “have to try” They have an upstairs grill room featuring a victorian fireplace with lovely views over one of Bath’s Parks, If you come here in the daytime maybe request a table upstairs with a view!

Should you book ahead for this place? I say yes. Weekdays are pretty ok to get a table straight away for non-booking, spontaneous kind of people. I booked my table for 7:45 pm and it was pretty sparse with bodies.

THE FOOD

My biggest mistake was drinking two cocktails in Sub13 so was feeling pretty silly. I decided to go straight in for my main where I ordered the French fries and a Rib eye steak (10oz). They have an seriously alluring range of other dishes if you dont fancy a steak but I really think trying to steak first time would be a smart move!

They also have a vegetarian dish on the menu which I’m sure can be made vegan so everyone can eat happily here.
To accompany my steak I ordered the Les Foncanelles, IGP Pays D’Oc, 2017 Merlot, which at £5.75 a glass was a steal. If you like red wine and want something deep and fruity this is your perfect first glass.

My Plate arrived perfectly presented with an interesting sauce in an edible cup. The steak itself was perfectly cooked medium rare, beautifully charred on the outside. Parts were a little fibrous but that didn’t spoil the experience for me. See, The Hudson specialise in using prime dry-aged steaks, handpicked by the local butcher which have all been aged for 35 days giving it an insane flavour and texture. The marbling the rib eye made it succulent and I could have easily made it through another one!
The french fries were REAL french fries, skinny and crisp with enough potatoey filling which was a relief! One of my pet peeves is to order fries and they come to my table with lies. The little side salad that accompanied the meal was enough to make me feel good that I ate something green. I was genuinely upset about seeing the last bite of cow on my plate and wondered if it was socially acceptable to order another one.

The overall food quality of the main was impressive and definitely one of the best steaks I have ever had… And I have eaten my fair share of steaks at places like The Hawksmoor and Blacklock. – Give me a shout if you want to know what these two places are like, otherwise I’ll do a comparison review sometime in the future!

Dessert…. Well, one thing about eating alone is that when you want dessert you have to eat the whole thing… when you wanna share it and not look crazy for eating a whole sticky toffee pud all to yourself. By this point with the wine and previous two bellinis, all I could think about consuming was a macchiato. I had a sneaky stalk of the dessert however from my table neighbours who had ordered the sticky toffee pudding. It looked amazing! – rather generous helping too.

So as the waitress approached to take my dessert order, my anxieties building, I did the Yasmine-iest thing possible and ordered a glass of Port…. Even though I couldn’t see. However, I enjoyed the tiny sweet and boozy glass of Quinta do Crasto Vintage Port – 2011 rather than the Tawny Taylors which I have in my personal stash.

My meal overall cost £38.95 which was pretty good considering. If I had a starter and dessert I would have spent un £50 still for a full 3 courses.

Do I recommend this place? 100% YES. The food quality and service were exemplary with a rightly priced menu and upmarket surroundings. Steak lover dream and lovely place to have a civilised dinner in Bath.
